The Alabama Shakespeare Festival offers top-tier local theatre right in the heart of Montgomery year-round, with shows ranging from The Bard’s classics to contemporary, social-commentary pieces.

About Alabama Shakespeare Festival
Alabama Shakespeare Festival (ASF) was founded in a high school auditorium in Anniston, Alabama in 1972, and was proclaimed as the State Theatre of Alabama in 1977. The ASF’s current home in Montgomery was constructed in 1985 and has provided a space for over a dozen plays a year for scores of delighted audience members, which makes it one of the largest Shakespeare Festivals in the world based on attendance. ASF shows are produced with professional actors who belong to the Actors’ Equity Association – many of these talented individuals come to ASF from New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles. Over the years, the Festival has attracted over three million visitors from all 50 states and more than 60 foreign countries, making it one of Alabama’s top tourist attractions.

See A Show
Each year the Alabama Shakespeare Festival produces several musicals, Shakespeare works, and contemporary plays by established playwrights and emerging new authors alike. Several shows each year will be family-friendly, while others are geared toward grown-up audiences – you can check the ASF website for a complete guideline on each season’s shows to see which ones contain any references that may not be suitable for children.

Learn To Act
The Festival provides educational opportunities for children and adults alike throughout the year. Each year, the ASF puts on Camp Shakespeare for children ages five to 12 and Camp Shakespeare Extreme for students in grades seven to 12, which focuses on classical acting training. Students who are more interested in musical theatre can attend Broadway South: Musical Theatre Camp where high school students can learn singing and choreography. The Festival also hosts a Weekend Warrior camp on weekends for students interested in learning stage combat. Adults and students can attend the ASF Academy, which is taught by professional actors in 10-week sessions of acting classes.
